Handling & Caring for Artwork
Proper handling and care help preserve the quality and longevity of your artwork.
Here are some key tips:
1. Clean Hands & Gloves
Always handle artwork with clean, dry hands. For delicate or high-value pieces, consider wearing cotton or nitrile gloves to avoid transferring oils or dirt.
2. Support from Both Sides
When lifting or moving a piece, support it from both sides. Avoid holding it by the edges, especially if it’s on paper or canvas, as this can cause warping or damage.
3. Avoid Direct Contact with the Surface
Never touch the painted or printed surface directly. If handling an unframed canvas, hold it by the wooden stretcher bars at the back.
4. Store & Transport with Care
Keep artwork in a dry, cool environment away from direct sunlight, humidity, or heat sources.
Use acid-free tissue paper or glassine to protect unframed works.
When transporting, wrap the piece securely in bubble wrap and use a sturdy box or portfolio case.
5. Framing & Hanging
Always bring artwork to a professional framer for the best results. They can recommend archival materials that protect and enhance the piece.
Use high-quality, UV-protected glass or acrylic for framed pieces to prevent fading.
Ensure wall fixings are secure and suitable for the weight of the artwork when hanging.
6. Cleaning & Maintenance
Dust framed pieces with a soft, dry microfibre cloth.
A dry, unused 1-inch paintbrush is ideal for gently removing dust from textured surfaces or intricate details.
Avoid household cleaners or sprays, as they can damage the surface.
If placing artwork on a table, clean the surface first and ensure it is completely dry to prevent dirt or moisture from transferring.
If needed, consult a professional conservator for cleaning older or delicate works.
Following these guidelines will help keep your artwork in excellent condition for years to come!
